Treating Depression with PRISTIQ

What is PRISTIQ?

PRISTIQ is a prescription medication that has been approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of depression in adults. PRISTIQ belongs to a class of medications called serotonin-norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors (SNRIs).

How does PRISTIQ work?

As an SNRI, PRISTIQ is thought to work by affecting the levels of two neurotransmitters believed to play a key role in depression, serotonin and norepinephrine. Serotonin and norepinephrine are chemicals that occur naturally in the brain. While no one knows for sure what causes depression, many experts believe that it may occur when neurotransmitters are out of balance.

Suicidality and Antidepressant Drugs

Antidepressants increased the risk compared to placebo of suicidal thinking and behavior (suicidality) in children, teens, and young adults. Depression and certain other psychiatric disorders are themselves associated with increases in the risk of suicide. Patients of all ages who are started on antidepressant therapy should be monitored appropriately and observed closely for clinical worsening, suicidality, or unusual changes in behavior. PRISTIQ is not approved for use in children under 18.
