Eight positive things you can do for you

You probably have plenty of things to take care of in your life. Maybe a family. Responsibilities at work. Or even a list of errands that need to be done. But here are a few things you can do to make sure you don’t neglect taking care of yourself—the #1 person in your life. (Even doing just one is something to feel good about.)

1. Eat healthy.

If you feel better physically, you may feel better emotionally. So pass up the junk foods and reach for the wholesome stuff. It may seem hard at first, but you could really cultivate a taste for it.

2. Make your meals a special time.

Turn off the television. Turn on some soothing music. Set the table, even if you’re eating alone. Arrange your food attractively on the plate, even if it comes in takeout containers. Meals can be both satisfying and rewarding.

3. Keep moving.

Moving your body helps you to feel better physically and can improve self-esteem. It doesn’t have to be anything high-energy or strenuous. Often, a simple walk outdoors can do the trick.

4. Make time for things you love doing.

You may be so busy that you spend little or no time doing things you enjoy. Go see your favorite movie or go shopping. Make a quick list of things you enjoy doing and start doing them regularly.

5. Look your best.

It’s not about expensive haircuts and fancy clothes. It’s about showing a little of your unique style. Search your closet, not the stores. You may find a jacket or skirt you love that’s back in style.

6. Spend good times with good people.

Spend time with the people who make you feel good about yourself and avoid those who don’t. Sometimes it’s all too easy to gravitate to the people who push your buttons.

7. Do something nice for someone.

Doing something nice for someone else can be like giving a gift to yourself. It can be as simple as a smile. Or some kind words. Or a helping hand. You’ll feel better if you make someone else feel better. And finally…

8. Reward yourself.

If you’ve managed to do any of the things above, you certainly deserve a reward. Go download some music you’ve been wanting. Curl up with a good book. Or, every once in a while, give yourself the weekend off.
